The Next Ship Home: A Novel of Ellis Island by Heather Webb

Publication Date: February 8, 2022
Sourcebooks Landmark
Genre: Historical Fiction

Ellis Island, 1902: Two women band together to hold America to its promise: “Give me your tired, your poor … your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” A young Italian woman arrives on the shores of America, her sights set on a better life. That same day, a young American woman reports to her first day of work at the immigration center. But Ellis Island isn’t a refuge for Francesca or Alma, not when ships depart every day with those who are refused entry to the country and when corruption ripples through every corridor. While Francesca resorts to desperate measures to ensure she will make it off the island, Alma fights for her dreams of becoming a translator, even as women are denied the chance. As the two women face the misdeeds of a system known to manipulate and abuse immigrants searching for new hope in America, they form an unlikely friendship―and share a terrible secret―altering their fates and the lives of the immigrants who come after them. Inspired by true events and for fans of Kristina McMorris and Hazel Gaynor, The Next Ship Home holds up a mirror to our own times, deftly questioning America’s history of prejudice and exclusion while also reminding us of our citizens’ singular determination. This is a novel of the dark secrets of Ellis Island, when entry to “the land of the free” promised a better life but often delivered something drastically different, and when immigrant strength and female friendship found ways to triumph even on the darkest days.

In this re-imagining of Phantom of the Opera, meet a Christine Daaé you’ve never seen before…

Christine Daaé sings with her violinist Papa in salons all over Paris, but she longs to practice her favorite pastime—illusions. When her beloved Papa dies during a conjurer’s show, she abandons her magic and surrenders to grief and guilt. Life as a female illusionist seems too dangerous, and she must honor her father’s memory.

Concerned for her welfare, family friend Professor Delacroix secures an audition for her at the Nouvel Opéra—the most illustrious stage in Europe. Yet Christine soon discovers the darker side of Paris opera. Rumors of murder float through the halls, and she is quickly trapped between a scheming diva and a mysterious phantom. The Angel of Music.

But is the Angel truly a spirit, or a man obsessed, stalking Christine for mysterious reasons tangled in her past?

As Christine’s fears mount, she returns to her magical arts with the encouragement of her childhood friend, Raoul. Newfound hope and romance abounds…until one fateful night at the masquerade ball. Those she cares for—Delacroix, the Angel, and even Raoul—aren’t as they seem. Now she must decide whom she trusts and which is her rightful path: singer or illusionist.

To succeed, she will risk her life in the grandest illusion of all.

“Heather Webb combines music and magic seamlessly in The Phantom’s Apprentice, weaving glittering new threads into the fabric of a classic story. Romantic, suspenseful and inventive, this novel sweeps you along to its breathless conclusion.”—Greer Macallister, USA Today bestselling author of The Magician’s Lie and Girl in Disguise

“Heather Webb’s The Phantom’s Apprentice delivers a performance worthy of the Paris Opera. Unlike so many other renditions of the Phantom’s tale, Webb breathes life into Christine, so often portrayed as the helpless victim. Christine’s evolution from ‘damsel in distress’ to self-reliant woman is masterfully done, hooking the reader from the first page. Webb’s work is immersive, well-crafted, and beautifully paced. A must-read for fans of this bewitching legend!”—Aimie Runyan, author of Daughters of the Night Sky

Brava, brava, belissima…

I had been anxiously awaiting this book since Ms. Webb announced that she had written it and that it would be released. I’m a HUGE Phantom fan and so is the author, which made me excited. Phans tend to respect the source material–the book and the play–so I trusted Ms. Webb. This is a reimagined version yet I still sensed the respect and love for the original versions. Christine is a bit more assertive in this version and to that I say “hell yeah!” She’s always been portrayed as this meek figure but I loved that she had a bit more spirit. By the end of the novel, she no longer allows for anyone to decide her fate but her.

In a shock to me, I was actually invested in Raoul and Christine’s romance. It isn’t a huge factor; this is not  romance novel. He comes off more as someone you root for, rather than a fop. As to our Phantom, I found he was more similar to Susan Kay’s version; he is far more malevolent and threatening. This is to say, he was a bad ass and I loved him still. (I’d never want to be with him but I am a fangirl.)

The story itself is strong and it will stay with you, you’ll find yourself thinking about it and that’s a good thing. The characters are well developed–even the secondary ones. The scenery is richly described and it’s easy to lose yourself whilst reading. Ms. Webb is a powerful writer and I daresay the ‘Angel of Music’ was on her shoulder as she wrote this. It was a wonderful read and I can’t wait to read it again.

Additional Notes:

  • I’d give it ★★★★ stars.
  • I received a copy of this in exchange for my honest review. Thank you! ❤

A mesmerizing tale of art and passion in Belle Époque France.

As a woman, aspiring sculptor Camille Claudel has plenty of critics, especially her ultra-traditional mother. But when Auguste Rodin makes Camille his apprentice—and his muse—their passion inspires groundbreaking works. Yet, Camille’s success is overshadowed by her lover’s rising star, and her obsessions cross the line into madness.

Rodin’s Lover brings to life the volatile love affair between one of the era’s greatest artists and a woman entwined in a tragic dilemma she cannot escape.

Advanced Praise for Rodin’s Lover

“Rodin’s Lover is a textured historical novel that captures the indomitable spirit of artist Camille Claudel, a woman whose mighty talent was nearly eclipsed by her potent love for fellow artist Auguste Rodin. Can two passionate, creative talents thrive together or will one flame inevitably consume the other? Webb gracefully explores this ignitable relationship while illuminating Claudel’s untold heartbreak and evocative artwork. A story of human emotion, once raw and malleable, now preserved to lasting stone.” ~ Sarah McCoy, New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author of The Baker’s Daughter

“Rodin’s Lover is the story of Camille Claudel–one of history’s boldest and most brilliant artists. Forced to choose between a torturous love affair and the art that consumed her, Claudel is an audacious and authentic character who deserves to be remembered. RODIN’S LOVER is epic and unflinching–a book you won’t soon forget.” –Deanna Raybourn, NYT bestselling author and Rita Winner of City of Jasmine waltz

“Rodin’s Lover is an evocative portrait of the talented and explosive Camille Claudel who struggled between passion as the lover of Rodin and recognition as an innovative sculptor in her own right. From smoky cafés to clay-streaked ateliers, Heather Webb has created a vivid picture of Belle Époque Paris.” –Jessica Brockmole, author of Letters from Skye

“Dazzling!….. In Rodin’s Lover, author Heather Webb brings to life, with vivid detail, the story of brilliant and tormented sculptress Camille Claudel and the epic love affair with the legendary sculptor who worshiped her. Deeply moving and meticulously researched, this book will capture your heart, then hold it tightly long after the final page.” –Anne Girard, author of Madame Picasso

“A rich, sensuous novel…[was] written with great empathy for the very human Rodin and his lover, this novel of the visceral world of the 19th century Paris ateliers, of clay-stained dresses and fingernails, lithe models who vow to remain and then go, family love which stays through all difficulties and talent which endures, comes vividly to life.” –Stephanie Cowell, author of Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet

“Rodin’s Lover is a taut and engrossing look at sexism in the arts through the eyes of a lesser known figure, Camille Claudel, inspiring the reader to examine what’s changed and what hasn’t.” –Julie Kibler, bestselling author of Calling Me Home

I don’t know if I’ve said, but I really enjoy art. I don’t possess any real artistic talents, unfortunately, but I do have an appreciation for those who do have it. And no matter the selected medium, I am always one to take the time to appreciate it, even if I don’t understand it. It’s weird to think that as little as 100 years ago, women weren’t really accepted into the art world. In a time where women were expected to marry and have children, where mental illness wasn’t understood…it was a world full of repression.

I have been looking forward to this book for months and when I saw the chance to join the tour–I jumped. An amazing feat for one of my size, I assure you! I was not disappointed in the least. We are transported to Belle Epoque France and into the grand world of artists and muses, models and awards.

Image result for camille claudelI confess, I never knew who Camille was and this saddens me as she was an extraordinary woman for her time; however, she was a terrible victim of her family. The odds were always stocked against her and in the end…it was rubbish how her family treated her. The only people who ever truly and really ever loved her and believed in her were her father and Rodin. (Just my opinion!) It was a terrible shame what became of Camille. I would go further into her life, but we know how I feel about giving you spoilers. (Though, if you read this book or go to wikipedia…you could find out what became of her.)

I highly, highly recommend that you get yourself a copy of Heather’s book and introduce yourself to Camille. She is very worthy of your attentions and her story will captivate you. I cannot sing enough praises to Ms. Webb, I absolutely loved this book. You’d be silly to miss this. It is certainly a book I will reread and recommend to others.

Rating: I’d give it ★★★★ stars.
